Why Am I Not Receiving Verification Codes (2FA/MFA) on My Unitel Voice Number?

Learn why some verification codes, security codes, and automated text messages may not be delivered to your Unitel Voice number.

Why Am I Not Receiving My Verification Code?

If you're trying to receive a verification code through text messaging on your Unitel Voice number, you may find that certain websites, banks, apps, or online services do not deliver these messages.

These codes are commonly called:

  • 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) codes

  • MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) codes

  • OTP (One-Time Password) codes

  • SMS verification or security codes

Unitel Voice uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. Some companies restrict or block verification codes from being sent to VoIP phone numbers as a fraud prevention measure.

This is an industry-wide limitation affecting VoIP providers, not an issue specific to Unitel Voice.

Why Do Some Companies Block VoIP Numbers?

Many websites and financial institutions use SMS verification to protect accounts and prevent fraud.

Because VoIP phone numbers can sometimes be used to create fraudulent accounts, certain companies choose to send verification codes only to traditional mobile carrier numbers.

These restrictions are particularly common with messages sent from short codes, which are shortened phone numbers used by businesses to send automated messages, including six-digit security codes.

Even if SMS messaging is active and working properly on your Unitel Voice number, some verification messages may still be blocked by the company sending them.

Which Companies May Not Send Verification Codes to Unitel Voice Numbers?

Our underlying SMS carrier, Bandwidth, has identified several companies whose verification codes may not be delivered to VoIP numbers on its network.

These include:

  • Google

  • Meta (Facebook and Instagram)

  • Microsoft Outlook

  • X (formerly Twitter)

  • Venmo

  • Wells Fargo

  • Tinder

  • Zelle

  • Ameriprise Financial

Important: This is not a complete list. Other companies, banks, websites, and applications may also restrict verification messages to VoIP numbers.

Can Unitel Voice Receive Verification Codes?

Unitel Voice numbers with SMS service enabled may receive verification codes from some providers. However, we cannot guarantee delivery of 2FA, MFA, OTP, or short-code verification messages.

Whether a verification code is delivered depends on the policies and restrictions of the company sending the message.

Activating SMS on your Unitel Voice account does not override these restrictions.

What Can I Do If I'm Not Receiving a Verification Code?

If you're having trouble receiving a verification code, we recommend the following:

  1. Use a mobile phone number: If available, request the verification code using a traditional cellular number instead of a VoIP number.

  2. Try another verification method: Many services offer alternatives such as email verification, authenticator apps, or passkeys.

  3. Contact the sending company: Ask whether they support sending verification codes to VoIP phone numbers.

  4. Verify your SMS service: If you're also having trouble receiving regular text messages, contact Unitel Voice Support to confirm that SMS is properly activated on your account.

Can Unitel Voice Fix This Issue?

Unfortunately, Unitel Voice cannot override restrictions imposed by banks, websites, apps, or other companies that choose not to send verification messages to VoIP numbers.

If regular SMS messages are working but verification codes from a specific company are not arriving, the issue may be related to the sending company's VoIP restrictions rather than your Unitel Voice service.

For important accounts that require reliable SMS verification, we recommend using a traditional mobile carrier number.
