What does STIR/SHAKEN mean?

STIR/SHAKEN is a framework of interconnected standards designed to combat caller ID spoofing, a common tactic used in illegal robocalls. The acronyms stand for Secure Telephone Identity Revisited (STIR) and Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs (SHAKEN). This system enables originating carriers to "sign" calls as legitimate, allowing other carriers to verify the caller ID information before the call reaches consumers. By digitally validating the handoff of phone calls through various networks, STIR/SHAKEN ensures that the displayed caller ID matches the caller's true identity.
